iOS 26.5 SpringBoard Restart, Overheating & Keyboard Bug
Fix iOS 26.5 problems on iPhone: SpringBoard crashes ('re-spring') under heat, predictive keyboard appearing at bottom, RCS messaging and Siri instability.
What's going wrong with iOS 26.5?
iOS 26.5 was released by Apple on May 11, 2026 for iPhone 12 and later, alongside iPadOS 26.5 and watchOS 12.5. The update bundled new Apple Intelligence languages, security patches, and CarPlay fixes. Within 48 hours, three distinct regressions surfaced across user reports on the Apple Support Communities, Reddit r/iOSBeta, and the MacRumors forums.
The three confirmed issues are: (1) SpringBoard "re-springing" — home screen icons reload after the device gets warm (charging + Lightning/USB-C accessory + heavy app); (2) Predictive-text keyboard appearing at the bottom of the screen during app-switching gestures, especially on iPhone Pro Max sizes; and (3) RCS messaging, Siri, and the new app-sharing handoff intermittently failing until the device is rebooted. Most affected users are on iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro/Pro Max, and 17 Pro models.
When does it occur?
- During or after heavy charging while using the phone (icons reload silently)
- After 10+ minutes of GPS navigation, gaming, or 4K video recording (thermal trigger)
- When swiping between apps via the gesture-bar — the keyboard predictive bar shows at the bottom instead of attached to the keyboard
- When sending an iMessage to an Android contact (RCS may stall as "Sending...")
- After invoking Siri while AirPods are connected — Siri occasionally times out
- When trying the new app-sharing feature with a nearby device
Common causes
- SpringBoard memory pressure under thermal throttling — When the SoC throttles, iOS frees background processes, but a 26.5 regression also tears down SpringBoard
- Predictive-text view-controller positioning bug — Triggered by the gesture-bar interaction with the QuickType bar in the new keyboard layout
- RCS Universal Profile 2.7 handshake failure — Apple's RCS implementation occasionally fails handshake with US carriers after a network handoff (Wi-Fi to LTE)
- Siri intent-extension memory cap — iOS 26.5 lowered the memory ceiling for Siri's on-device LLM, causing OOM on busy contexts
- Charger and case heat trap — MagSafe + thick case during fast charging pushes thermal headroom over the new SpringBoard crash threshold
- Lingering iOS 26.4 caches — Some users still have stale iCloud Keychain / Apple Intelligence caches from 26.4 that conflict with 26.5
Step-by-step fixes
- Install iOS 26.5.1 when it ships — Apple typically issues an x.x.1 patch within 2-3 weeks of a major dot release. Open Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates > turn on both Download iOS Updates and Install iOS Updates. This will pick up 26.5.1 the moment it's pushed.
- Stop SpringBoard re-springs by reducing heat — Remove the case while fast-charging, use 20W or lower chargers instead of 30W+ during use, and turn off Background App Refresh in Settings > General > Background App Refresh > Off. Setting Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode while charging also drops the thermal load significantly.
- Reset the keyboard dictionary to fix the predictive-text positioning — Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary. Re-enable the QuickType bar via Settings > General > Keyboard > Predictive toggle off, then on. The predictive bar re-anchors to the keyboard correctly after re-toggle.
- Toggle RCS messaging off and on — Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging > toggle Off, wait 10 seconds, toggle On. You will see "Activating RCS..." for up to 5 minutes. This forces a fresh handshake with your carrier (Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T) and clears the broken session that causes "Sending..." stalls.
- Reset Siri's on-device model — Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Listen for > set to "Off", then back to "Siri" or "Hey Siri". Then restart the phone. This forces iOS to re-load Siri's intent-extension models from disk, clearing the OOM state.
- Force-restart the iPhone — Press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears (~10 seconds). Force-restart clears SpringBoard state, kernel daemons, and re-establishes RCS / Siri sessions in one go.
- Disable Apple Intelligence temporarily if your iPhone is unbearably hot — Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > toggle Apple Intelligence to Off. This stops the on-device LLM from running idle compute, drops the baseline temperature by 3-5°C, and indirectly stops most SpringBoard re-springs.
- As a last resort, restore via Finder/Apple Devices app — Connect iPhone to a Mac or PC, open Finder (macOS) or Apple Devices (Windows), put the phone in DFU mode (Volume Up + Volume Down + hold Side button until you see "iPhone in Recovery Mode"), then click Restore iPhone. This is a clean install that eliminates stale 26.4 cache conflicts.
If it still doesn't work
If SpringBoard still crashes after rebooting on iOS 26.5 with Apple Intelligence off, the issue may be hardware-thermal rather than software — particularly on iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro Max where the titanium frame retains heat. Run a diagnostic in the Apple Support app (Settings > General > About > scroll to Diagnostics & Usage) and look for SpringBoard-2026-05 panic logs. Share these with Apple Support so they can correlate with the open Feedback Assistant tickets.
For RCS / Siri instability that persists, the carrier side may be at fault — try Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings, then re-add your Wi-Fi networks. Apple is tracking these regressions on their [iOS 26 release notes page](https://support.apple.com/en-us/121161) and the next 26.5.1 build is expected to address SpringBoard and keyboard issues directly. Until then, the heat-management workaround in step 2 is the most reliable mitigation.
